1001 Churches

Known as the “1001 Churches,” the region refers to a group of historical settlements and ruins located in the volcanic Karadağ area, north of Karaman province neighboring Konya. Although the name “Binbirkilise” translates to “1001 churches,” the area actually contains around 40–50 churches of various sizes along with numerous monasteries, cemeteries, cisterns, dwellings, and castle ruins. These remains are scattered around the old villages and hamlets of Madenşehir, Üçkuyu (Değle), and Üçkaya at the foot of Mount Karadağ.

Particularly vibrant between the 4th and 9th centuries AD, the region once served as a bishopric center. Structures still visible today include basilica-planned churches, chapels, monastic complexes, rock-cut tombs, water cisterns, granaries, and military watchtowers. These buildings reflect an intriguing example of Early Christian and Byzantine architecture in the Anatolian steppe. Since the early 19th century, Binbirkilise has attracted Western travelers and scholars (such as Charles Texier in the 1830s), and their illustrations and studies brought it into academic literature. Today, the region remains a draw for history enthusiasts and photographers, offering visitors an open-air museum experience with its remote setting and mystical atmosphere.

Day Trip: The 1001 Churches site is approximately 100 km from Sillehan Boutique Hotel (about 1.5 hours by car). As it is further from the center of Konya, it is often combined with a visit to Çatalhöyük on the same day (~55 km distance from Çatalhöyük to the Karadağ area). Since roads and signage may be limited in the Binbirkilise region, we recommend visiting with an experienced guide or a local driver. If requested, our hotel can provide information on guided tour options to Binbirkilise and its surroundings.
