Eflatun Pınarı - Hitit Water Monument (UNESCO)
The Eflatunpinar Hittite Water Monument is located in the Beyşehir district of Konya. It dates to the last quarter of the 13th century BC. It is thought to date to the reign of King Tudkhaliya IV. Its unique stonework, composition of reliefs, and design as an open-air temple distinguish it from other rock monuments of the Hittite civilization. The Eflatunpinar Monument was not built on natural rock, but was meticulously assembled from precisely cut andesite blocks. It consists of a large pool built over a natural spring, with horizontal channels parallel to the pool's walls that allow the water to flow into the pool. The rectangular rocks are decorated with relief figures of gods and goddesses. Hittite Water Monument was included on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2014. Its inclusion is based on its reputation as one of the rare water systems where flowing water is collected by a central pool system and used efficiently when needed. The Eflatunpinar Monument is the finest example of this system, which has survived intact after the Hittites. It also provides valuable information about the plumbing and water technology of the period.
